Brazilian rains can be both powerful and prolonged, especially in March, and the red clay washes away easily. The story goes that Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote the song during a visit to his family rancho, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state amid a steady rainstorm which had turned the roads and landscape to mud. He had become frustrated with the difficulties the rain was causing for the construction of a new boundary wall along his property line. The skies rained from above while chaos reigned

The Waters of March is composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim (who wrote both the Portuguese and English lyrics. Both sets of lyrics speak of "the promise of life," perhaps allowing for other, more life-affirming interpretations, and the English contains the additional phrases "the joy in your heart" and the "promise of spring."
