A Slithering Success in East Devon! We’re so excited to announce that the UK’s rarest reptile, the Smooth Snake, is now thriving on the East Devon heaths where it belongs, after an over 50 year absence. In the Summer of 2009, a partnership project was launched to reintroduce non-venomous Smooth Snakes into parts of the UK where they were missing. Found on heathlands, Smooth Snakes will coil around their prey items, which can include small mammals like shrews, nestlings and even other reptiles like lizards and Slow Worms! This species is Britain’s rarest reptile and is only found in specific heathland spots.
