NEW YORK (AP) — The toll of wildfires is usually counted in acres burnt, property destroyed and lives lost to smoke and flames. But three studies published Wednesday suggest the cost to human health from the Maui and Los Angeles wildfires was substantially higher.

“About 41% report worsened health now than a year before the fires, and we’re also seeing higher rates of depressive symptoms, about 50% of adult participants,” Maunakea said. “We’re also seeing about 50% of keiki in our cohort reporting depressive symptoms as well as some signs of PTSD.”
