They were likely killed under the weight of snow nearly as deep as a 10-story building, Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday.

This is Alaska’s first fatal avalanche reported this season. It is also the country’s deadliest since February 2023.

The slide caught the heli-skiers late Tuesday afternoon in the Chugach Mountains near the skiing community of Girdwood, located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Anchorage, said McDaniel.
