The 7.4-magnitude earthquake's epicenter was at San José del Palmar, about 250 miles west of Colombia's capital, Bogota, officials said.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday in western Colombia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with tremors felt in several cities across the country.

More than 1,500 residential buildings were damaged, they said, some of them irreparably. At least 20 buildings collapsed in the city of Cali, trapping people inside, according to its mayor. Eighteen health centers and dozens of schools were also damaged, and air service to more than half a dozen cities was suspended.
