Texas health officials reported just one new measles case over the last week, an apparent signal the spread of the highly contagious illness has slowed in the state, after a slight uptick in cases was reported in dozens of other states.

The Texas health department said on Tuesday it was "cautiously optimistic" about the spread of measles in the state after it saw only one additional case since its last update. The state recorded 729 cases of measles on Tuesday,

The CDC says more than twice as many measles have come from outside of the U.S. compared with May of last year, and most of those are in unvaccinated Americans returning home. In 2019, the U.S. saw 1,274 cases and almost lost its status of having eliminated measles.
