"We do have pockets of Wisconsin, within the Wisconsin community as a whole, that have lower vaccination rates and if measles were introduced, we could have a similar type of outbreak as seen in Texas," said Shauer.
The percentage of Wisconsin children who are vaccinated against measles has declined from 88.2% in 2013 to 81.6% in 2023. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that 95% of a community be vaccinated to prevent outbreaks of measles.
Symptoms typically start within 7-14 days of exposure, but also have been known to appear as long as 21 days after initial exposure.
Wisconsin last reported a measles case in April 2024. In that instance, a Dane County adult was infected and was believed to have contracted the illness after traveling to another state.
