Euro zone inflation edged down slightly in February to 2.4% thanks to a slowdown in energy price increases, official data showed today.

For four years, the ECB has been trying to slow the economy down, raising its key deposit rate to a record 4 percent to choke off inflation, before gradually lifting its foot off the brake since June. Next week’s expected rate cut will be the sixth in the current sequence, and will bring the deposit rate down to 2.5 percent.

Inflation in Europe eased to an annual 2.4% in February, supporting the case for another interest rate cut from the European Central Bank - but leaving open how far the central bank will go in lowering borrowing costs for an economy that's still struggling to show robust growth.

The ECB lowered borrowing costs for the fourth straight time last week and hinted at even more policy easing since inflation could be back at its 2% goal by late summer, economic growth is anaemic and a trade war was a distinct possibility.

The Dutch annual rate of inflation rose in February to 3.8%, national statistics agency CBS said on Monday in a flash forecast. In January, inflation fell to 3.3%. Month on month, the consumer price index was up over one percentage point.
