By Congress time standards, the bill moved at lightning speed — reaching President Trump’s desk less than six months into his term.

Congress has signed off on a $3.4 trillion legislative package featuring new tax breaks, spending cuts, and more funding for defense and immigration enforcement, delivering President Donald Trump his “big, beautiful bill” despite rumblings from fiscal hawks about the projected $4 trillion it could add to the national debt over the next decade.

At its core, the bill permanently extends the tax cuts introduced in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act while introducing a raft of new breaks. Some, such as an expanded child tax credit and an above-the-line deduction for charitable contributions, are permanent changes to the tax code.
