The longest-serving man on Mississippi’s death row was executed Wednesday, nearly five decades after he kidnapped and killed a bank loan officer’s wife in a violent ransom scheme.

Mississippi has 37 death row inmates and all but one are men. Richard Gerald Jordan, 79, is the longest-serving death row inmate, and is scheduled for execution Wednesday.

The Associated Press reported that Richard Gerald Jordan is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, and he is one of several people on Mississippi's death row suing the state over its three-drug execution policy, which they assert is inhumane.
