Türkiye will host next year’s COP31 climate summit after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announces withdrawal of Canberra’s bid.

After months of talks, the host of COP31 will be Turkey, but the Australian environment minister will be the conference’s President of Negotiations.

The federal government has begun to contact Pacific leaders to canvass a COP31 "Plan B" which would see Adelaide abandon its bid for the global United Nations climate summit so long as Pacific nations are guaranteed a role in next year's conference.
