Hundreds of migrants from Morocco have swum into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta over the last week.

The influx triggered a chaotic humanitarian crisis and a flurry of fierce political attacks on both sides of the Atlantic.

The arrivals in Ceuta, a six-mile-long peninsula on Morocco’s northern coast that Spain has governed for centuries, have fueled political tensions.

“More than 48,000 — that is, virtually all of them — had already been returned to Morocco within 48 hours,” said the Spanish government

Around 50,000 migrants crossed into Spain’s North African exclave of Ceuta this week, a mass influx that overwhelmed local authorities. At least 57 people died during the crossings, which prompted tighter border security measures across Europe.

Most of the migrants returned to Morocco after as many as 60,000 overwhelmed the tiny Spanish territory of Ceuta.
