In an on-going overhaul of NASA's Artemis program, agency officials say it will take seven years to build a sophisticated base on the moon.
The Artemis program was officially named and announced by NASA in May 2019, when Artemis III was intended to land “the first woman and next man” on the lunar South Pole in 2024. Since then, the uncrewed Artemis I test flight launched in 2022, and Artemis II is complete.
Spacesuits may not be ready for 2028 mission, NASA says
Four astronauts are returning to Earth after a historic moon-circling mission. NASA plans for uncrewed lunar landers in 2026 and the Artemis III test mission in 2027. A human moon landing is planned for 2028, with the long-term goal of building a moon base.
The Artemis II mission fulfilled the original objective planned during Trump's first term and has origins in prior administrations.
