The September jobs report, which was delayed due to the government shutdown, comes amid a slowdown in hiring across the U.S.

The National Retail Federation expects retailers to hire between 265,000 and 365,000 seasonal workers this year, down from 442,000 in 2024. Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a research firm, reported that holiday staffing could slip to its lowest level in more than a decade.

“Trends like digital nomadism and the wider availability of digital nomad visas are driving demand for work-from-anywhere jobs, but the marketplace is still highly competitive,” said Toni Frana, manager, career expert at FlexJobs.
