Chagos Islands Deal With UK Backed By India And PM Modi, Says Mauritius PM Ramgoolam
Mauritius has said that India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has supported the signing of the agreement between the island nation and United Kingdom over the Chagos Islands. The United Kingdom signed an agreement on Thursday to hand over the sovereignty over the contested and strategically located Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
Why did the government sign the Chagos deal now?
Shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge told MPs the government was "following the legal advice to act definitively to our detriment, entirely on the basis of hypothetical risk that has not yet materialised and which we could challenge". The government's second argument is that without a deal, China would get a toehold in the islands.
